The Story

Winter settled gently over Hawthorn.

The orchards stood bare beneath pale skies.

The fields rested.

The standing stones wore a dusting of frost each morning before the rising sun warmed them once more.

Beneath the Black Oak, the little stone cottage stood quietly upon the hillside.

Its walls had been built from the very earth beneath it.

Its oak beams had been shaped by the Ashes.

Its roof had been thatched with reeds gathered from the marsh.

Its hearth held a single smooth stone from the beck, laid there with the same quiet care as every hearth in Hawthorn.

It was never the largest home in the village.

Nor the finest.

Yet before long, every path seemed to lead towards its door.

The Reader welcomed everyone.

A shepherd uncertain where to graze his flock.

A young couple preparing to build their first cottage.

A child carrying questions too large for someone so small.

An elder who wished only to remember the names of those who had gone before.

The Reader gave no commands.

He passed no judgement.

More often than not, he simply listened.

And somehow, those who left his cottage often carried the answer they had been seeking all along.

As winter gave way to spring, the herbs beside the doorway began to grow.

Rosemary.

Thyme.

Sage.

Lavender.

The bees returned with the blossom.

The orchards flowered.

The valley filled once more with birdsong.

One evening, as the sun settled behind the wolds, there came a gentle knock upon the Reader's door.

It was the village beekeeper.

In his hands he carried a small earthenware pot sealed with wax.

"I've brought the first honey of the season," he said.

"The bees gathered it beneath the Black Oak."

The Reader thanked him and placed the honey upon the hearth.

Not long after, another visitor arrived.

It was the forester.

Across his shoulder hung a small bundle of tobacco leaves, carefully grown in the sheltered garden beside his cottage and cured slowly through the warmth of the summer hearth.

"A gift," he said.

"For the colder evenings."

The Reader smiled.

"The finest gifts are those freely given."

He hung the tobacco leaves from one of the old oak beams above the fire to dry a little longer.

As evening settled over Hawthorn, the honey was gently warmed beside the hearth.

The fire crackled softly.

The tobacco leaves released their rich, earthy fragrance into the warm oak timbers above.

Sweetness mingled with woodsmoke.

Dark honey met the warmth of cured leaves.

Outside, the wind whispered through the branches of the Black Oak.

Inside, another story was told.

The seasons passed.

The little stone cottage became a place known to everyone in Hawthorn.

Children climbed the hill to hear old tales.

Neighbours came to settle disagreements before they became quarrels.

Travellers rested there before continuing their journeys.

Some arrived seeking wisdom.

Others came only for company.

All were welcomed.

Before long, the people noticed something curious.

Long before the cottage came into view...

Long before smoke could be seen rising from its chimney...

The wind carried its familiar fragrance across the hillside.

Dark woodland honey.

Warm cured tobacco.

Oak warmed by the hearth.

Whenever that comforting scent drifted through the valley, the villagers would smile.

"The Reader is home," they would say.

And somehow, they always knew there would be a place waiting beside the fire.

For the Reader believed every story deserved to be heard...

And every traveller deserved to find a welcome at journey's end.

For the Best Fragrance Experience

Our wax melts are carefully crafted to deliver a rich and lasting fragrance. To enjoy the very best performance, consider the following:

Room Size

Larger or open-plan spaces naturally require more fragrance to fill the room. For the best scent throw in these areas, using more than one wax burner may be beneficial.

Fragrance Choice

We use the highest fragrance load our wax can safely hold. As every fragrance is made from a unique blend of ingredients, some scents will naturally be lighter or stronger than others.

Wax Burner

Your choice of wax burner plays an important role in fragrance performance. Burners that become too hot, or have only a short distance between the tealight and the melting dish, can cause the fragrance to evaporate more quickly. For the best results, we recommend using a wax melt burner with approximately 10cm between the tealight flame and the melting dish, allowing the wax to melt gently and release its fragrance gradually.

Safety Information

  • Never leave a lit wax burner unattended.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Use only with a suitable wax melt burner.
  • Do not add water or any other substance to the melted wax.
  • Allow both the wax and burner to cool completely before handling.
  • This product is intended for home fragrance use only. Do not consume or apply to the skin.
  • All Fen & Wold products are fully CLP compliant and are supplied with the appropriate safety information.
