Beyond the Bramble Hollow, where the woodland opened into gentle fields, a sunlit rise overlooked the valley.

It was there that the people of Hawthorn planted their first orchard.

The Reader had often said that some gifts of the land were gathered...

But the finest were planted for generations yet to come.

So they set young plum, pear and apple trees into the rich soil, each one planted with the quiet hope that those who came after would one day rest beneath their branches and share in their harvest.

Spring after spring, the orchard blossomed.

Soft white flowers covered the hillside, filling the air with the promise of another fruitful season.

Summer brought deep green leaves and the steady hum of bees drifting from blossom to blossom.

Then autumn arrived, and the branches bowed beneath the weight of ripening fruit.

The Reader often wandered among the trees in the early morning.

He would pause beside the oldest saplings, resting his hand upon their young trunks.

"A tree is a promise," he would say.

"Its sweetest fruit is seldom for the one who plants it."

'The years slipped quietly by.

The saplings became sturdy trees.

Their trunks thickened.

Their branches stretched wide across the hillside.

With every passing season, the orchard grew older, wiser and more beautiful.

When the plums ripened, their rich fragrance drifted across the warm autumn air.

Along the edge of the orchard, wild rhubarb flourished in the cool shade, its crisp green scent bringing brightness to the sweetness of the dark fruit.

Every harvest became a celebration.

Families climbed ladders to reach the highest branches.

Children laughed as they gathered windfall fruit from the grass below.

Great baskets overflowing with plums, pears and apples were carried home to be shared among neighbours, baked into pies, stirred into preserves and enjoyed around welcoming hearths.

No harvest belonged to one family alone.

The orchard had been planted together.

So its gifts were shared together.

As generations came and went, the orchard became far more than a place where fruit was grown.

It became a living memory of Hawthorn itself.

Every blossom promised another spring.

Every harvest honoured the hands that had planted before.

And every ancient tree reminded the people that the greatest gifts are not those we keep...

But those we leave behind for generations yet to come.
