Beyond the Old Glasshouse, where the gardens opened into sunlit fields, lay a gentle slope where summer always seemed to arrive a little earlier.

There, rows of strawberry plants stretched across the rich soil, their bright red fruit hidden beneath a canopy of deep green leaves.

Around the edges of the patch, generous clumps of rhubarb swayed softly in the warm breeze, their broad leaves sheltering the earth below.

The Reader often visited when the first berries began to ripen.

He never reached for the finest fruit himself.

Instead, he watched the village children searching eagerly beneath the leaves, their laughter echoing across the fields each time another perfectly ripe strawberry was discovered.

"The sweetest harvest," he would often say,

"is the one that is shared."

Soon, woven baskets overflowed with sun-ripened strawberries and freshly cut rhubarb.

Back in Hawthorn, kitchen windows stood open as the comforting aromas of bubbling preserves, warm crumbles and freshly baked tarts drifted into the summer air.

It seemed as though every cottage held a little of the season, carefully saved to brighten the colder months ahead.

The Strawberry Patch became more than a place where fruit was gathered.

It became a place where generations gathered together.

Grandparents showed little hands which berries were ready to pick.

Neighbours exchanged recipes across the hedgerows.

Children returned home with stained fingers and smiling faces.

When the harvest was finished, long tables were set beneath the open sky.

Families shared food, stories and laughter until the evening sun slipped gently below the horizon.

The Reader watched quietly, knowing the greatest gift the field had given was not the fruit itself...

But the moments it had created.

In time, everyone simply knew it as The Strawberry Patch.

A place where the richest harvest was never measured by the baskets carried home, but by the memories made, the kindness shared, and the joy that lingered long after the last berry had been picked.
