Beyond the gentle waters of the beck, where the woodland opened into quiet clearings, lay a sheltered hollow hidden amongst ancient hedgerows.

Few people found it by chance.

Those who did rarely forgot the way back.

With each passing spring, the hollow stirred into life.

Tender green shoots pushed through the rich woodland earth.

Wildflowers coloured the edges of the clearing.

The brambles stretched further with every warm day until they formed thick, arching walls that sheltered the hollow from the world beyond.

By late summer, glossy blackberries hung heavy upon their winding stems.

Beside them, wild rhubarb flourished in the cool, damp soil, its broad green leaves spreading across the woodland floor.

The Reader often brought the children of Hawthorn there.

They arrived with empty baskets and curious minds.

Before anyone reached for the fruit, the Reader would gently remind them,

"Take only what you need."

"The land is generous..."

"...but it is never to be hurried."

The children gathered carefully.

Their fingers became stained with blackberry juice.

Laughter echoed through the hedgerows as baskets slowly filled.

The crisp, green scent of wild rhubarb drifted through the cool woodland air, mingling with the rich sweetness of ripe berries warmed by the late summer sun.

When every basket was full, the people returned together to Hawthorn.

Some of the fruit became pies cooling upon cottage windowsills.

Some was stirred into preserves that would brighten the darkest winter mornings.

Some was simply shared between neighbours before anyone thought to keep it for themselves.

The Reader always smiled as he watched.

He believed the harvest belonged not to the person who gathered it...

But to everyone who shared it.

Year after year, families returned to the hollow as their parents and grandparents had done before them.

Children who once walked beside the Reader now brought their own sons and daughters along the same woodland paths.

The stories never changed.

Nor did the laughter.

Before long, the place became known simply as The Bramble Hollow.

A place of quiet abundance, where the sweetest fruits were gathered with grateful hands, shared with generous hearts, and remembered long after the last blackberry of summer had fallen from the vine.
