Beyond the Strawberry Patch, where the sunlit fields gave way once more to winding lanes, stood a little stone cottage whose windows glowed warmly through every season.

Climbing flowers framed its doorway, and smoke rising from its chimney promised warmth long before anyone reached the gate.

Though modest in size, the cottage was never empty for long.

Whenever the Reader's journeys brought him along that lane, he would pause beneath the old oak lintel and gently knock upon the weathered door.

Someone was always pleased to see him.

The kettle was forever simmering above the hearth.

Another log always waited beside the fire.

And there was always an empty chair at the old oak table.

"A home," the Reader would often say,

"is not measured by the strength of its walls...

...but by the warmth of the welcome found within them."

In the cottage garden, wild peonies flowered each summer, filling the air with quiet elegance.

Inside, polished oak beams, well-worn furniture and the gentle glow of the fire gave every room a feeling of timeless comfort.

Together, the delicate beauty of peony and the rich warmth of oud became the fragrance of a place where kindness was woven into everyday life.

Neighbours gathered there after long days in the fields.

Travellers found shelter from passing storms.

Children curled beside the hearth, listening as familiar stories were told once again.

No one remained a stranger for very long.

The Reader believed every village needed such a place.

Not because people lacked homes of their own...

But because everyone, at some point in their life, needed a door that opened without question.

As the years passed, the little cottage became known simply as The Country Cottage.

A place where every visitor was welcomed, every story found a listening ear, and every season was shared around a warm hearth.

Many years later, as Hawthorn welcomed more travellers than any single cottage could ever hold, its people built a larger place of welcome beside the bridge.

Yet they never forgot what the little cottage had taught them.

That true hospitality begins not with a grand building...

But with an open door.
